Rule of thumb, if you have to screw the top down tight, there's a little glass carafe and your cost is around $70-$100, that's steam - avoid it. You don't want to have to continue cooling down and heating back up. With the pump machine, you can leave it on and just continue adding water all throughout the party and use it when you want... not when the machine's ready! I have used several Gaggia models and enjoyed them all. Look to spend at least $200. And remember to measure your counter space -- width, depth and height.
